I read a great post the other day that rounded up a bunch of reader submissions about family Christmas traditions and it got me thinking about all of our own family traditions we’ve held onto over the years, and ones that I would love to implement in the future. Growing up, we always waited until after my birthday on Dec. 3rd to get a Christmas tree but now, Jeff and I typically get ours the weekend after Thanksgiving so we have lots of time to decorate before going back to work.
Here are a few more of my family’s traditions that we’ve pretty much managed to stick to year after year:
- On Christmas Eve, we typically make tamales for dinner, though this sometimes can vary. What doesn’t vary is the peppermint hot fudge sundaes we always make for dessert! Peppermint ice cream sells out super fast this time of year so you have to remember to get it early – Trader Joe’s typically has a great option.
- Growing up, we always got to pick one present to open up on Christmas Eve and then of course, opened any presents from people who weren’t going to be there on Christmas Day.
- On Christmas morning, we typically have monkey bread to have as we open presents (this is a super similar recipe, though we omit the nuts and raisins). Prep it the night before for a stress-free morning.
- The bottom of our stockings usually have a mandarin orange in them – Santa keeps us healthy!
I’d love to hear about some of your favorite family traditions or some that you’d love to start in the future!
