Happy Monday friends! It’s hard to believe its already the first day of February!
A few weeks ago, I received a discount code to try Hello Fresh, a food subscription service similar to Blue Apron. I was intrigued by Hello Fresh for two reasons: first, it seemed a bit healthier than Blue Apron, and second, each week Hello Fresh includes one of Jaime Oliver’s original recipes, who is , one of my fav chefs for recipe inspiration anyway.
You can choose from three options–an omnivore box, vegetarian box, or family box, each for varying prices. The vegetarian box was the cheapest and the recipes more aligned with how I like to eat so I went with that option of our first try.
We received our box on Thursday, a day late thanks to winter storm Jonas, with the following three recipes:
- Jaime’s Cool Mexican Bean Wraps with Bell Peppers, Tomatoes, & Chili
- Roasted Cauliflower Steaks with Bulger, Tzatziki, and Spiced Oil
- Roasted Beet and Lentil Salad with Feta Cheese, Arugula, and Walnuts
Surprisingly, Jaime Oliver’s recipe was actually my least favorite of the three. It was only spiced with chili powder which definitely not enough of a flavor profile to enhance the diced tomatoes and tomato paste, but the other two recipes were great, so it might have just been a fluke.
What I found the most interesting was that unlike Blue Apron, which gives you perfect portions of everything, you actually had to measure out ingredients and were left with lots of leftovers like an entire tube of tomato past, 1/4 can of kidney beans, and half a head of cauliflower.
Also, I found the direction formatting to vary a little across recipe sheets and overall, it seemed like you kind of needed to look ahead and know what you were doing to master the recipe in the time referenced.
However, despite a few tweaks I’d love to see implemented, I loved the healthier recipe focus and on busier weeks, it would be such a great resource! The app was also an amazing addition as you could see step by step instruction as well as the recipes included in your next set of boxes.
