So the reason why we headed to Charleston, South Carolina in the first place was for the Zac Brown Band’s Southern Ground Music & Food Festival. I don’t remember how we first heard about the event, but since we used to go to Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit Concert in Cali in October all the time, I guess we just had it in our blood to find ourselves another October festival–east coast style!
We purchased our tickets way back in May, and were beyond excited when this past weekend came around. Since it was our first time, we decided to go to both days to see the full line-up: Kenny Rogers, Jason Mraz, Willie Nelson, Band of Horses, Kacey Musgraves, Natalie Maines, and, of course, Zac Brown (plus lots more!). On our drive down there on Friday evening, I told Jeff that I never would have guessed I’d been seeing them in South Carolina of all places!
Come Saturday, we were a little unsure of what to expect since the festival website has a pretty pathetic amount of information, but were pleasantly surprised by how well run everything was. The event was much smaller than I expected with all amenities and stage fitting nicely in Blackbaud Stadium (a soccer stadium) on Daniel Island. I could even bring in my precious water bottle to fill up at the hydration stations! We brought blankets to set up in the grass the first day, but opted for the seats/bleachers on Sunday so my short self could actually see the stage.
The music was great, but I was just as, if not even more so, excited for the southern food selections:
Pork Tacos with corn tortillas, cucumbers, pickled radishes and carrots, cilantro, basil, and siracha lime cream. (Hands down my favorite item at the festival…surprised?)
Zac Brown’s Pork & Greens Sandwich: All-natural grilled pork tenderloin, covered in Zac’s love sauce with spicy collards
Local Flounder Po Boys
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams: Loveless Biscuit with Peach Jam
All in all, it was a great event and an even better excuse to visit an amazing city!
