Happy Friday, everyone!
I hope you had a great week! It’s been pretty hot and humid around here, a far cry from the torrential rain we’ve been getting. We’re heading up to Northern Virginia for a birthday visit with my father-in-law, and I’m hoping, maybe even a quick ocean visit!
At the beginning of July, I decided to sign up for a CSA, or community supported agriculture, program with Glade Road Growing. Back in SLO, we used to subscribe to SLOVEG, a unique CSA that was run by a 3rd party and went to various local farms to get the best of what each one had available. We were also able to get weekly deliveries of fresh fish! I never gave a second thought to the fact that it was a year round CSA until I started doing a little research about similar programs when we moved here.
I was also a little surprised that I couldn’t make monthly payments at the CSAs around here and had to instead had to pay up front. Now, I understand why many farms need this money in one lump sum, but it just isn’t something that our budget affords us to do. But while at the farmer’s market on morning, I discovered that Glade River Growing offered monthly payments. I went home to do a little more research and at between $55-68/month for a weekly share (about $14/week), I was sold!
I love CSA programs because not only are you supporting the local food culture, they’re also such a great reminder of how much better local, seasonal food tastes. We’ve also been able to get whole chickens that they raise on their farm too which has been absolutely wonderful. We still supplement our weekly fruit + veggie intake a bit with a trip to the farmer’s market, but so far, I’m obsessed with what we’ve been getting!
Here’s what we’ve gotten in our first three boxes:
- Snap Peas
- Spring Lettuce Mix
- Bok Choy
- Red Bunching Onions
- Turnip Greens
- Beet Greens
- Rainbow Chard
