I’m excited to be linking up with Tara over at Mix and Match Fashion for another edition of What I Wore to Work. I had so much fun participating last time and was left with a gazillion new outfit ideas!
Today I wanted to talk not just about work outfits but also easy ways to transition those looks from work to night.
The inspiration for creating this look was this fabulous Target dress I got on super sale in the fall ($10!). Originally, the dress itself was a bit on the short side for work, so I had to, for the first time in my life, take the dress to the tailor to get it lengthened. I’m 5’4 so usually, I stick to purchasing petite pants, or I have to get them hemmed, so they’re not dragging on the floor. Hemming is always quick and painless, but when you’re lengthening a garment, you have to make sure there is enough material tucked away to work with–luckily for me there was!
For the work look, I wanted to create a look that still let the pattern of the dress shine, but added layers to make it more work appropriate. Since the dress still was a bit on the short side, I paired it with tights and flats for a more conservative look. I also dressed the look up by adding a velvet trimmed navy sweater I got on sale at Banana Republic after Christmas and added a dark brown belt to add definition at the waist.
For the evening look, I stripped down the layers and really let the dress be the star of the look. To make it more fun, I added a two-toned Bauble Bar bib necklace that just happened to perfectly match the colors of the dress; and then, I paired the dress + necklace combo with chunky tan Lucky Brand sandals. It’s hard to tell in the picture, but those heels are 5 inches–I always get a little nervous walking in them!

Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins
Mary Nichol Handbag Giveaway!
Thanks! I totally would too on the weekend, but I’m a teacher by day so it probably wouldn’t be classroom appropriate!
Such a cute dress, love the pattern! Thanks so much for linking up!
Thanks for having me!
I love this dress…and bought it last year when Target had it….but it was too short for me and I kept feeling uncomfortable to wear it that short….if it had just another inch or two on the length I would have kept it!
It looks great on you!
I know, I was shocked by how short it was–definitely glad to be short for once so I could make it work!
