It has been such a long time since I’ve done a book review here. Part of that is blamed on that gosh darn Game of Thrones series and its 1100 page books, but I’ve also just been a lazy reader lately. But as soon as I finished the last Game of Thrones book (for awhile anyway!), I knew I wanted to read something a little more light-hearted, and well–feminine. I was so excited when I saw Kate Morton’s new book, The Secret Keeper, on the Amazon kindle page. I fell in love with her writing style when I devoured The Forgotten Garden a little over a year ago and have since eagerly read everything else that she’s published, though never connected with her subsequent releases like I did with that first one. Until The Secret Keeper that is.
Do you ever finish a book and don’t want to start a new one because you just can’t quite let go of the experience you just had? Well, thats how I felt about The Secret Keeper. The book is told through the eyes of three women in two different time periods. We meet young, passionate Dolly, trying to reconcile her actual life with her lofty desires and conservative, caring Vivian, who seemingly has everything but whose life isn’t exactly what meets the eye, during London’s Blitz. Connecting the two stories in the modern day is Laurel, Dolly’s daughter and famous actress, who is suddenly gripped by the desire to solve the mystery of her mother’s, Dolly’s, past as Dolly lies on her deathbed.
Morton’s writing is intelligent but emotional, allowing one to really connect with the character’s relationships and personal desires. I was so wrapped up in the story and feeling like I was actually there that I almost didn’t guess the surprise ending till it was thrust into my lap. But, unlike many surprise endings, this one did not seem forced or flashy or overwrought. It fit with the tone of the book and actually made me fall in love with it even more.
In case you haven’t guessed, I highly recommend this book. But, like I said, I still can’t seem to decide on what to read next for the fear of being let down. Any suggestions??
