Happy Happy Friday!

Today’s an especially great Friday  because I have a 3 day weekend–woohoo! I actually plan on working most of today, but I usually work most of the day Sundays anyway, so this might actually give me 2 much needed full days off. Plus, my father-in-law will be in town visiting for the weekend, so we’ll have no excuse just to sit around all weekend.

I was complaining last weekend because there wasn’t much fall color, but it seems like it all changed at once the past 2 days. To celebrate my day off + the gorgeousness, I took the back roads all the way home from work–this is definitely my favorite part about the east coast so far!

Some things, though, are just a little hard to get used to. Take antique shopping: everything is made from cherry and very formal, with a price tag to match. I do understand that the furniture is much older than what I can get on the west coast, but it just isn’t my style. So, when decorating our new townhouse, I’ve turned to places like Target, TJ Maxx, online stores like Joss & Main, and good ol’ craig’s list to add a little character to our home.

I’d had my eye on this cabinet for our bar area for a long time, waiting for the price to drop, and it finally did last week (+ a few Target gift cards), so I decided to take the plunge and buy it! Our old bar was just sitting on a few metal industrial storage thingys, so this was definitely an improvement.

I love the way everything looks behind the glass–just a touch of shimmer and presence–without having to be too neat or worry about constant dusting.

I finished the top off with a few Ikea finds (the plant + lantern + clear vase), an adorable shimmery owl and festive pumpkin (TJ Maxx), and a commemorative platter that belonged to my grandfather.

The living room area is also pretty small, so I wanted to add a nice big mirror to reflect a little light and give the illusion of just a touch more space. And yes, that is a real leaf in the vase…gotta cut corners where I can!

I’m definitely loving the way it turned out!
