Pizza is definitely a staple in our household. When we can’t think of anything else to make or have leftover veggies or meats, it’s usually where we turn. S when I came across this pizza roll recipe in August’s Better Homes and Gardens, I just couldn’t resist. I mean, they’re like personal pizza cinnamon rolls–who could resist?
That being said, these pizza rolls may just be one of the messiest dinners I’ve ever made. Part of that may have been because I left Jeff do the pizza assembly/rolling part while I took photographs, but seriously, just wait until you see the pictures below.
The process to create pizza rolls really is nearly the same as creating cinnamon rolls (such a fun holiday project!).
First, you roll out your dough into a nice big oblong shape and then fill the center with your topping. In our case, that was chicken sausage, green olives, garlic, onions, cheese, and of course, tomato sauce.
Tip: be careful with how much tomato sauce you add–you might want to go a little lighter than normal or when you go to roll, you may get it all over the baking sheet. Just saying.
Next, you carefully roll in the ends of your dough to create a nice seal.
Here comes the messy part. Using a knife, cut 1-inch sections of the dough/pizza mixture and rotate each section until the pizza side is now facing upward. You may want to pinch the bottom of each pizza roll to counteract major spillage.
When you’re done, and your baking sheet looks about like this disaster, sprinkle a little cheese on the opening of each roll, and then bake the rolls for about 25-30 minutes at 425 degrees.
Alternatively, you could just bake a few and then freeze the rest in individual containers for an easy lunch or dinner.
The final product was amazing, although I must say I’ve always been a sucker for individual size things.
Now excuse me while I return to scrubbing the baking sheet.
Sausage & Olive Pizza Rolls
Makes 6 rolls
Ingredients:
1 cup tomato sauce
1 cup cheese
1/2 cup manzanilla olives, diced
2 pieces chicken sausage
2 cloves garlic
1/2 onion, diced
olive oil
Steps:
Heat oil in a medium frying pan. Add chicken sausage, garlic, and onion, cooking until the onions become translucent, about 5 minutes.
Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees.
Roll out your pizza dough into an oblong shape on a baking sheet.
Add tomato sauce then top with chicken sausage, garlic, onions, olives, and about 3/4 cup cheese.
Roll in the edges of the pizza dough to form a seal.
Carefully cut the roll into 6 1-inch chunks and rotate each so that the filling is facing upward, pinching in the bottom of the dough as you rotate.
Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Enjoy!
Time: 45 minutes
