I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but Cal Poly and SLO are sort of a tradition in my family. My parents both went to college here and before that, my mom actually lived in Pismo Beach with her family when she was younger. My mom’s younger sister also went here and most recently, my older sister went here as well.
We all probably had our different reasons for wanting to come, and each got to know SLO and the surrounding areas in our own unique ways. I still remember the day we moved my sister into the dorms and just being in awe of, and intimidated by, a college campus and how different the environment was in this town compared to the one we grew up in.
Still, until I moved here, I had no idea how much it would change me. I went from driving just down the street to my best friend’s house to willingly walking or biking halfway across town to avoid using my car. My idea of eating out involved Baja Fresh for Mexican food and Round Table for pizza and now, I’m always on the hunt for a fabulous little local restaurant to spend my money in.
One of the first things my sister told me when I moved here was that I had to eat at Nucci’s, a small family owned pizza restaurant near campus, and had to order their raspberry salad. So, being a good little sister, I dutifully dragged Jeff there to try it and walked out totally unconvinced of its awesomeness.
Fast forward a year and the SLO mindset had finally begun to take hold. We decided to go back to Nucci’s for a second time and seriously, what had I been thinking? It was amazing! Silly freshman.
Now, I love going to Nucci’s for lunch to get a slice of the day and the raspberry salad–romaine with apples, candied walnuts, huge chunks of bleu cheese, and the best raspberry salad dressing ever.
Unfortunately, you can only order by slice during lunchtime, so we normally order a whole pizza for dinner like the classic with pesto, goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, parsley, black pepper & Parmesan.
Although I definitely don’t mind having to eat an entire pizza instead of a slice!
