Upper Crust Trattoria is a local Italian restaurant located off of Madonna and Los Osos Valley Roads in what we normally refer to as the more commercial part of SLO as it’s also home to Costco, Target, Old Navy, TJ Maxx…you get the point. Since it’s not within walking distance of our house, Jeff and I don’t make it over there very often except for shopping purposes, but this weekend, we had the opportunity to check out Upper Crust for the first time.
I must admit, I was a little skeptical about the quality of the restaurant simply because of it’s location, but I was proved wrong as soon as I opened the door. I should have known better since it’s located right next to one of my favorite coffee shops–Nautical Bean! The restaurant has a great little bar area at the front to sit and grab drinks and appetizers at while you wait for a table. You can also order drinks at the bar and take them over to a cozy seating area by a fireplace.
Jeff and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a little pre-dinner cocktail, so I ordered a Grapefruit, Cranberry Martini and Jeff ordered a pineapple, whiskey concoction. Yum!
After about a 20 minute wait, we were seated in a cozy corner next to yet another fireplace. I decided to order the Southwestern Tequila Lime Pasta: grilled chicken breast, red onions, and fresh red and yellow bell peppers in a creamy cilantro-pesto sauce, over fettuccini. It was a heaping portion of creamy, olive oily deliciousness–perfect since you know how much I love having leftovers!
Jeff went with the classic Rigatoni Bolognaise: a blend of ground beef, sausage, and white onions, mixed with house-made marinara and tossed with rigatoni pasta. Since it had beef and pork in it, I didn’t try it, but Jeff said it was great–his only complaint was that it didn’t seem like homemade pasta.
We finished the meal with a huge slice of red velvet cake which was so absolutely horrible that we devoured the entire thing in about 5 minutes.
I’m glad we put our aesthetic prejudices aside and were able to discover another great, local restaurant!
